Providence

About the show:
Providence is the melodrama story of a 32-year-old plastic surgeon, Dr. Sydney, or Syd Hansen (Melina Kanakaredes), who fed up with her unfufilling life as a doctor, and her dead-end relationship with a rich, snobby, agent named Jerry, heads back to her roots in Providence, RI for her younger sister, Joanie's (Paula Cale) wedding. There, she finds that her chain-smoking mother, Lynda (Concetta Tomei) and her Veterinarian father, Jim (Mike Farrell) are letting their marriage fall apart. Also, she finds that Joanie's not only getting married, but is 9 months pregnant, as well. Her family neglected to fit that in, thinking she'd "over-react" in her big-sister instinct. Not to mention, that her baby-bro, Robbie (Seth Peterson), is up to his neck in gambling debts, with a police record bigger than the rift that's grown between her and her once close-knit clan. Then, during Joanie's wedding, the worst happens. Her mother drops to the floor while standing next to her from a heart-attack. Syd started CPR, but it was too late. The family's only chance for a rebound was dead before she hit the floor. Joanie, of course, cancels the wedding. Syd and her father clash, along with Robbie. Syd then runs back to her fancy Los Angeles practice to find that her @$$-hole boyfriend is in the shower with someone else---a MALE client. (hehe). Syd then turns around and runs home to her family, just in time to deliver her neice, Hannah. She decides to stay, after reconnecting her extremely close relationship with her dad, and Joanie. Even Robbie. And rediscovering why she became a doctor in the first place--the help people. She now runs a low-budget medical clinic in a converted church called St. Clares. Her father has again started to maintain human contact, after many years of spending every waking moment with beings of the four-legged variety in the vet. clinic he runs out of their basement. Though, Syd's mom does stop in for a visit now and then, just to annoy the hell out of Syd in her dreams. Thank god for mothers.
